Now is a crucial moment for audiences to connect with Dr. Elders, who overcame segregation and whose grandfather escaped slavery. As our country struggles with equity and inclusion, many of the ghosts of the past have reappeared. Our country has become more divided.
Some Americans mistakenly believe that segregation and bigotry occurred generations ago; however, recently seventeen states have rewritten or removed Black History from schools, banning books and authors. Dr. Elders’ life story and her version of the American dream needs to be widely told.
